Graduated from Dundee University (in Scotland) in 1973 and worked in the UK until August 1975 when she was invited to work for Queensland Health. They paid her airfare out to Australia but the return trip was not included so Maggie is still here!
She spent time on Palm Island and worked in the paediatric unit at TUH for a year, followed by a year in the obstetrics and gynaecology unit.
She then opened this practice – one of the patients from the first day (3rd January 1978) is a member of our staff! Maggie expanded the practice by delivering babies (about 1,500 in total!) and we are delighted that some of her babies are now grandparents themselves!
Her interests include minor gynaecological procedures including insertion of Mirena’s, minor skin surgery (she now leaves the more complex procedures to Dr Abram!) osteoporosis and diabetes management. She encourages patients to take charge of their health thus optimizing this. She really enjoys preconception, antenatal and postnatal care and worked as a senior VMO at Townsville Hospital running the postnatal clinic for 20 years (until she got “sacked” by Campbell Newman).
Maggie has been a GP supervisor for over forty years and has enjoyed hosting medical students in the practice since 1979. Our first medical student’s daughter is now a doctor!
She remains involved in various community groups including IMPS (Infant management and parenting skills)
Dr Nitika Chavan completed her basic medical degree and finished as a Specialist surgeon in Obstetrics and Gynaecology from KMC, Manipal (a top 3 medical university in India) 20 years ago. She spent the next decade in the NHS, UK, completed her MRCOG in 2006 before deciding to settle as a GP with special interest in women’s health.
Dr Nitika continued doing hospital women’s health clinics including gynaecology ultrasound and office Hysteroscopy while also completing her Diploma in Paediatrics/Child health. Family priorities generated a wonderful move to Australia.
She developed a keen interest in skin cancer diagnosis and treatment while working as a highly respected GP in North Richmond, Sydney from 2012 to 2016.
A final move with family to Townsville in 2016, generated further interest and enthusiasm in skin related disorders. She further developed her knowledge, skills and understanding of the issues faced in North Queensland by completing primary and advanced certification in skin care medicine (general dermatology), skin surgery, and dermatoscopy.
She retained her interest in academics and medical education having been a RACGP supervisor for GP trainees since 2017 and a Senior Lecturer in JCU College of Medicine since 2021. From 2021, she has also been appointed as a Senior Medical Officer in Dermatology at the Townsville University Hospital supporting the department as well as running the Melanoma clinic.
She expanded her understanding and application of Advanced Laser therapy in the treatment of skin disorders and has received full accreditation as a licensed provider. She intends to continue to expand her dermatology skills providing speciality care at community level.
